Applying for Graduate Non-Matriculated (GNM) Credit

This memo is for students enrolling in one of the 2011-12 certificate programs, either the CF-Certificate or RM-Certificate, who wish to received GNM credit for the certificate courses, and who did not previously apply and receive GNM status from the UW Graduate School.

Must I register every quarter in order to maintain GNM status?

If students do not register the first quarter they are granted GNM status, they will forfeit the status. After the initial quarter they have registered, students will not lose their GNM status unless they miss four consecutive quarters of registration, or register in any other status.

First, please note that your application for GNM status for the credits earned in one of the two CompFin certificate programs is independent of your application and acceptance into one of the programs, and it is independent of your registration in individual courses in the Computational Finance program. There is a separate online procedure within the UW Graduate School to which students must apply. In order to be eligible to receive GNM credit for this course by the UW Graduate School in collaboration with the AMATH Department, it is important that you complete the following steps.

UW Graduate School: Applicants for GNM must complete a UW Graduate School application using the Create Applicant Profile tool.

  1. Students should access the UW Graduate School web page at: https://www.grad.washington.edu/applForAdmiss. If you are a new applicant, click the “create a new applicant profile” in the upper right of the screen GNM Application

  2. The CREATE APPLICANT PROFILE screen (below) will appear. If you have previously completed a profile for the UW Graduate School, it is not necessary to create a new one. Only CFIN students who are new to the UW Graduate School and who are requesting GNM status must complete the Applicant Profile creation steps. GNM Application

  3. Once a student has created their APPLICANT PROFILE, they should “Save & Continue” which will advance the student to the next screen. A student should then “Create a new application” by clicking in the designated area. GNM Application

  4. Once the “create a new application” button has been pushed, the student will be provided with the following drop down menu of options: "Graduate", "Graduate Non-Matriculated", or "Visiting Graduate". Since you are interested in GNM status, you should select "Graduate Non-Matriculated" as the choice. GNM Application

  5. The selection of "Graduate Non-Matriculated" will then advance the student to an additional drop down menu. The student should select "Applied Mathematics (MS) online" as the program in which they wish to obtain GNM credit, until such time that a selection "MS-CompFin online" is available and then select "MS-CompFin online". 6. After the selection of "Applied Mathematics (MS) online", the student will be advanced to sequential screens which will request additional information (much of which you as a Computational Finance Certificate Program applicant have already submitted). Reminder: this is a completely separate application for the GNM status managed by the UW Graduate School and it will require you to resubmit this material online (no paper necessary). The screen will appear as follows: GNM Application

  7. Student should completed and then click "Save & Continue" which will advance them to the following screen. GNM Application

  8. Student should “Save and Continue”. Student should then advance through and complete the options on the left side of the UW Graduate School application screen as shown in red below. GNM Application

  9. Upon completion of these steps, the GNM applicant should click "Submit Application" on the lower left of the screen. The system will inform you if the application is complete or not. If “not” complete, please provide the requested information until you have completed the application.
  10. Certificate students will be informed by the AMATH department as to whether or not your GNM application has been approved.
  11. This GNM application to the UW Graduate School should be submitted by no later than Monday, June 20th, 2011 in order for the student to be considered for GNM status. Students do not need to reapply for GNM status each quarter, as long as they maintain contiguous enrollment in the courses in either the CF-Certificate program or the RM-Certificate program. See http://www.outreach.washington.edu/nondegree/faq/default.asp#gnm_quarter.
  12. That’s it!
